Practical tips
• Leave a long end at the beginning and end of each piece for sewing
• Sew seams with RS facing, using mattress stitch.
• If you are using safety eyes with washers, attach them before stuffing the head.
Tension
20 sts and 26 rows for 10 x 10cm tension square over St st (not essential).

Making
Large Gnome: Legs and Body
Right leg
With yarn B, cast on 18 sts.
Rows 1-6: Starting with a RS k row, work 6 rows in St st.
Break yarn, keep sts on holder.
Left leg
Work as for Right leg but, do not break yarn.
Row 7 (RS): K18 across Left leg, k18 from holder, connecting both legs. 36 sts
Rows 8-14: Starting with a p row, work 7 rows in St st.
Row 15: (K4, k2tog) to end. 30 sts
Rows 16-18: Starting with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 19: (Kl, k2tog) to end. 20 sts
Rows 20-22: Starting with a prow, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 23: (K2tog) to end. 10 sts
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.
Large Gnome: Head
With yarn A, cast on 10 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: (Kfb) in each st to end. 20 sts

Rows 7-21: Starting with a p row, work 15 rows in St st.

Large Gnome: Arms (make two)
Rows 1-14: Starting with a WS p row, work 14 rows in St st.
Row 15 (WS): Knit for cuff edge.
Change to yarn A.
Rows 16-20: Starting with a k row, work 5 rows in St st.
Row 21: (P2tog) to end. 6 sts
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.
Large Gnome: Hat
With yarn D, cast on 24 sts.
Rows 1-8: Starting with a RS k row, work 8 rows in St st.
Row 9: (K2, k2tog) to end. 18 sts
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: (Kl, k2tog) to end. 12 sts
Rows 12-15: Starting with a prow, work 4 rows in St st.
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.
Large Gnome: To make up
Seam legs and body and stuff. With fastened-off yarn end of foot, sew seam without stuffing. Attach feet to body. Seam and stuff arms. Attach arms to body.
With fastened-off yarn end, seam head half way. With cast-on yarn end, work a gathering thread along cast-on edge and draw tightly. Stuff head and close seam. Seam and attach hat to head. With yarn F, make hair and beard with backstitch, leaving loops. Attach eyes.
With yarn E, embroider mouth and nose. Attach head to body.
Small gnome: Leg and body
Right leg
With yarn B, cast on 12 sts.
Rows 1-4: Starting with a RS k row, work 4 rows in St st.
Break yarn, keep sts on holder.
Left leg
Work as for Right leg but do not break yarn.
Connect legs
Row 5 (RS): K12 across Left leg, k12 from holder, connecting both legs. 24 sts
Rows 6-10: Starting with a prow, work 5 rows in St st.
Row 11: (K2, k2tog) to end. 18 sts
Rows 12-16: Starting with a prow, work 5 rows in St st.
Row 17: (Kl, k2tog) to end. 12 sts
Row 18: Purl.
Row 19: (K2tog) to end. 6 sts
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.
Small gnome: Head
With yarn A, cast on 12 sts.

Row 18: (K2tog) to end. 12 sts
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

Rows 1-9: Starting with a WS p row, work 9 rows in St st.
Row 10 (RS): Purl for cuff edge.
Change to yarn A.
Rows 11-13: Starting with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.
