Materials

This project can be done in any yarn in any weight. To make large and thick leaves, use aran or chunky weight yarn. To make smaller, more delicate leaves, use a 4-ply or DK weight yarn. Change the needle size accordingly.

About yarn used for samples

• Aran weight, 100g per 150m, 100% Acrylic

• Chunky weight, 100g per 130m, 55% Nylo

Special technique: i-cord

Using double-pointed needles cast on the required number of stitches. Do not turn. Slide stitches to the opposite end of the needle, then knit stitches again taking the yarn firmly across the back of work. Repeat to desired length.

Tools:4.5mm, Bamboo Knitting Needles Takumi Double Pointed(20 cm)(Art No.3840)
Cast on 3 sts and work 5 rows in i-cord.
Row 1 (RS): K1, (yf, k1) twice. 5 sts
Row 2 and every WS row: Purl.
Row 3: K2, yf, k1, yf, k2. 7 sts
Row 5: K3, yf, k1, yf, k3. 9 sts
Row 7: K4, yf, k1, yf, k4. 11 sts
Row 9: K5, yf, k1, yf, k5. 13 sts
Row 11: Skpo, k9, k2tog. 11 sts
Row 13: Skpo, k7, k2tog. 9 sts
Row 15: Skpo, k5, k2tog. 7 sts
Row 17: Skpo, k3, k2tog. 5 sts
Row 19: Skpo, k1, k2tog. 3 sts
Row 20: P2tog, p1. 2 sts
Row 21: Skpo and fasten off.

To finish: Weave in yarn ends. With a protective cloth placed over the motif, gently press flat with a steam iron.

*To make a bigger leaf, simply keep increasing two stitches on both sides of the centre stitch until leaf reaches desired width, then work decreases at each edge until 1 stitch remains.

Ladybird

Tools:2.75mm Bamboo Knitting Needles Takumi, Single pointed 23cm (Art No. 3011) or Double Pointed 20cm (Art No. 3834)
〇Body
With yarn A, cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: (Kfb) in each st to end. 10 sts
Rows 4-5: Starting with a p row, work 2 rows in St st.
Row 6: Knit (for edge).
Rows 7-9: Starting with a p row, work 3 rows in St st.
Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly to fasten off.

# Head
With yarn B, cast on 4 sts. Break yarn, thread through sts, pull tightly and fasten off. Stitch side ends together to make it into a tiny bobble.

# To make up
With fastened-off end, seam body and stuff. Attach head. With yarn B, French knot the dots and embroider centre line.

With yarn A, cast on 40 sts.
Rows 1-6: Starting with a k (RS) row, work 6 rows in St st.
Row 7: Cast off 8 sts, k to end. 32 sts
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: Cast off 8 sts, k to end. 24 sts
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: Cast off 8 sts, k to end. 16 sts
Row 12: Purl.
Row 13: Cast off 8 sts, k to end. 8 sts
Row 14: Purl.
Cast off.

# Sepal
With yarn B, cast on 15 sts.
Rows 1-3: Starting with a p (WS) row, work 3 rows in St st.
Row 4: (K1, k2tog) to end. 10 sts
Break yarn, draw through sts, pull tightly and fasten off.

# Small leaves: make two
Using aran weight yarn and 4.5mm DPNs, work as for basic leaf to row 5 (9 sts), then purl 1 row. Work as for basic leaf from row 15 to end.

# To make up
Roll petal from the short end to shape flower and secure centre with a few stitches. With fastened-off yarn end, seam sepal to cast-on edge, encase base of the flower and stitch them together. Attach leaves to flower.
